A commitment to Inclusivity

Dalton Dynamoes J.A.F.C is proud to announce its completion of the Understanding Neurodiversity in Grassroots Football training program, delivered by The Football Mental Health Alliance (FMHA). This initiative highlights the club’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment where every player and family member feels valued and supported.

The training, aimed at empowering grassroots football clubs to understand and support neurodiverse players and their families, equips participants with the knowledge and tools to adapt coaching methods, identify individual needs and create understanding and empathy within the football community. Dalton Dynamoes J.A.F.C now joins a growing network of clubs championing inclusivity and accessibility in the beautiful game.

A commitment to inclusivity

As part of the program, Dalton Dynamoes J.A.F.C has developed its own bespoke Club Neurodiversity Support Plan, a comprehensive framework designed to ensure the club remains a safe, supportive and welcoming environment for all players and their families.

This plan incorporates practical strategies, such as:

  • Adapting drills and training routines to meet individual needs.
  • Establishing quiet zones to support players experiencing sensory overload.
  • Maintaining open communication with families to collaboratively address challenges and celebrate progress.

Danny Matharu, Founder of FMHA, praised the club’s efforts: “Grassroots football is the heartbeat of our communities, and clubs like Dalton Dynamoes J.A.F.C are leading the charge in making it accessible to everyone. By undertaking this training, they’ve shown not only a willingness to learn but also a commitment to action. This isn’t just about ticking a box – it’s about creating real change that ensures no one is left on the sidelines.”

At Dalton Dynamoes, we are committed to making football a game for everyone. This training has helped us further understand the challenges some players face and the small changes we can make to have a big impact. We’re excited to put what we’ve learned into practice and to see our players and their families feel even more supported and included.

The training tackled key topics such as understanding ADHD, autism and related conditions, and how they manifest in a football setting. It provided actionable strategies for managing common triggers, like sudden changes in routine or sensory overload, while highlighting the importance of collaboration with families.

Neurodiversity affects approximately 15-20% of individuals, meaning in a typical grassroots squad, around three to five players may experience unique challenges. By addressing these needs, clubs like YOUR CLUB NAME are paving the way for a more inclusive footballing future.

Dalton Dynamoes J.A.F.C’s commitment to inclusivity benefits the entire club community. Coaches and volunteers gain new skills and insights, players build empathy and understanding and families feel reassured knowing those in their care are in a supportive environment.

This proactive approach also strengthens the club’s ability to attract and retain players, coaches and volunteers, building a stronger, more united team.
